Bedside Wall Sconce Height and Placement Guide

Place a bedside wall sconce from the mattress and seated reader, not from a generic floor height. Begin by testing the light source about 12 to 18 inches above the mattress, then adjust for headboard height, fixture shape, beam direction and the reader's shoulder and eye position.

Measure the Finished Bed Setup

Installers need the finished mattress height, not an empty room measurement. Record floor to mattress top, mattress thickness, headboard height and width, nightstand dimensions, bed width, reading position and the nearest outlet or electrical box.

Pillows can raise the seated torso several inches. Sit in the normal reading position and mark shoulder and eye level on removable tape. If two people use the bed, test both sides independently.

Choose a Vertical Starting Point

Testing the light source 12 to 18 inches above the mattress is a practical beginning for many beds. The fixture backplate may sit above or below that point depending on the arm and shade. Never send only one height to the electrician without a product drawing.

Check the lowest and highest fixture edges. A long curved arm may extend well below the shade, while a vertical light may span a large portion of the headboard. Confirm that pillows cannot touch a hot bulb or shade.

Set the Horizontal Position

Mounting directly above the nightstand creates a clean relationship, but the light must still reach the reader. Another starting method places the light slightly outside the mattress edge so the fixture does not crowd the headboard.

Mark the bed centerline and both mattress edges. Add the full fixture width and projection. Open drawers, move pillows and simulate getting in and out of bed before approving the box location.

Control Glare and Reading Direction

The light should illuminate the page or device without exposing a bright bulb at eye level. A shade that looks opaque when off may reveal the bulb when on. Test the intended bulb brightness and color temperature.

The Retro White Fabric Swan Neck Wall Lamp has a curved arm and tapered shade with a listed 18.7-inch overall height and 9.45-inch projection. Its visible shade position, rather than the round backplate alone, should guide the mockup.

Check Reach From Bed

A bedside light should be easy to turn off without standing. Confirm whether the control is on the fixture, wall, cord or separate dimmer. The current Casa Home representative wall lights reviewed for this guide are hardwired and use wall switches not included with the fixtures, so switch placement must be planned separately.

Test reach while lying down and sitting up. Keep controls away from moving headboards and behind-bed obstructions. For smart controls, maintain a physical control method that suits the electrical plan.

One Sconce or Two

Two matching sconces create symmetry and independent reading zones. One central fixture may work for a narrow bed but can cast uneven task light. A dual-head fixture can provide a wider composition from one junction box, although both lights may share one control.

The Classic Dual-Head 2-Lamp Wall Lamp is 14.96 inches wide and 17.13 inches high. Use the full two-shade outline when comparing it with a nightstand or headboard panel.

Adjustable and Fixed Fixtures

An adjustable arm can move light closer to the page, but its full travel needs clearance. Draw the extended and folded positions on the wall. Check that the arm cannot strike artwork, shelves or a person entering the bed.

A fixed globe or vertical sconce usually provides ambient rather than focused light. It can support reading when paired with sufficient output and diffusion, but verify the actual beam instead of assuming all wall lights perform the same task.

Coordinate With the Headboard

For a tall headboard, decide whether sconces sit within its width, outside it or above integrated side panels. Upholstered headboards may complicate wiring and mounting. Confirm wall structure and cable routes before furniture arrives.

If the bed position may change, a hardwired box reduces flexibility. Finalize bed, nightstands and headboard dimensions before closing the wall.
